Women have faced countless barriers to entering the corporate world for a significant amount of time. The rehabilitation industry is often perceived as a man’s domain. Yes, you heard it right; this bias has bled into rehab, where the image of a strong man therapist ‘fixing’ a patient persists. But at Granimals, this picture is being painted in a different way. We're a revolutionary force in injury rehab, and guess what? We're 52% women strong. Granimals is shattering stereotypes with a team driven by the power, empathy, and expertise of incredible women.
Every day, women survive battles their male counterparts may not even encounter. This is especially true in a country like India, where women around the country still have to cross the long and tiresome road to equality. From subtle prejudices to blatant discrimination, women's professional journey can be described as an uphill climb. We all know the narrative: strength is equated with masculinity and nurturing with femininity. These biases manifest in different formats like- unequal pay, lack of representation in leadership roles, and limited opportunities for growth. Since childhood, even today, girls are told to play with dolls and not build empires. They are told the boardroom is a place that belongs to men, where women's ideas are met with polite indifference. Society has long underestimated the potential of women, labelling them into roles deemed "appropriate" by outdated norms.
Meet the women who shaped and are shaping Granimals:
At Granimals, we strongly believe in the power of inclusivity. Our team mainly consists of women, not by chance, but by choice. In 2023, Granimals was co-founded by Aameen Goyal, Sidharth Uniyal, and Rochan Kakar. Even though the vision of the company is shaped by the strong convictions of these three men, who encountered various challenges during injury recovery and wanted to establish a platform to address the gaps in injury rehabilitation, they recognised the need for a member who could lead the way in creating a strong team of skilled physiotherapists. This is where Tina Thomas came into the picture as the first physiotherapist of the team. Tina not only built the team but also established the first set of rules about how Granimals will talk to their customers and how they will address their issues. Her insights were valuable as they reflected empathy, expertise, and structure. Once the team was built, the co-founders found that women were performing much better than the male team members at that time. It's important to note that this is not to say that men are terrible at work. It's just that we found that women are putting more effort than men towards diligently giving their patients the best possible care in the most caring and effective manner.
Shortly after the launch of Granimals, Shruti Joshi, who currently leads the design team, joined the company. As a professional artist and Sidharth's wife, she has been closely involved in the journey of Granimals from the beginning and has always been willing to contribute wherever needed. When I approached her to know more about her journey in Granimals, she told me-
“I spent most of my life away from home. My husband Sidharth and I had a long-distance marriage, which was very difficult for me. Despite the challenges, I focused on my work. Now, working at Granimals has allowed me to pursue my passion for art and has also brought me closer to my husband. I believe that Granimals is breaking stereotypes in many ways. We are not only changing the rehabilitation landscape but also setting a strong example of how women should be treated in the corporate world. Currently, 52% of Granimals' workforce is female, and they not only manage their household responsibilities but also excel at their jobs. Aameen, the CEO of Granimals, has expressed that he finds female employees more productive and that the first preference for hiring at Granimals is always given to women.”
Anuja has recently joined Granimals as an HR professional. In this role, she has developed and implemented various policies relating to employee well-being at Granimals. Anuja is fully committed to Granimals' vision and firmly believes that the company's mindset-focused approach to well-being is here to stay. This is her view on her journey with Granimals so far:
“I believe that working at Granimals has not only advanced my professional career but also greatly helped me to effectively balance my personal life and work. Nowadays, my mornings are joyful, and I eagerly look forward to each workday due to the fantastic working environment at Granimals. I am truly grateful to the co-founders and my team for their support whenever I need it.”
The women at Granimals are more than just employees; they are innovators, leaders, and change-makers. Their stories exemplify what can be achieved when gender biases are dismantled, and opportunities are equally distributed. By seeing women in positions of power, our young female employees understand that there are no limits to what they can achieve. Granimals has already revolutionised the rehabilitation landscape, and now it is also breaking stereotypes by providing opportunities and nurturing talent. We are creating a ripple effect that reaches far beyond our immediate sphere. Being a remote-first organisation, Granimals has paved the way for women who not only excel at handling their households but also excel in their respective professional roles. Let’s take a look at what the CEO of Granimals has to say about the female workforce of Granimals:
“Women offer a distinctive viewpoint and bring valuable strengths to the forefront. They excel as caretakers, excelling in cultivating trust and forming relationships. Women consider the entire situation, beyond just the injury, and comprehend the emotional impact, fear, and frustration accompanying physical discomfort. At Granimals, we've established an environment that honours and celebrates these strengths. We proudly demonstrate that compassion is not a weakness; it is a formidable force. Our female team cultivates a collaborative space where every voice matters, and vulnerability is not a drawback but a driving force for development. It's a place where positivity and empathy thrive, and where everyone is valued and supported. Because at Granimals, we believe healing involves more than just fixing the problem it is also about rectifying the way we care for each other”
This blog or this demographic is not about defying stereotypes, and it is about evincing that companies can be built on empathy and empowerment and thrive in a world obsessed with dominance. Granimals has not only allowed but also empowered the female workforce to take charge and bring their opinions to the front. We are more than proud to say that a majority of our workforce is female because it means that the next time when someone hears about a successful healthcare company, they will not assume that it’s another male-centric story; instead, they will think of Granimals and its 52% strong women workforce, who refuse to be discouraged and channel the societal doubts into determination.
